So far....

I have now undergone two Yahoo roto drafts, both 12 teams with 5x5 scoring. I do alot of these in prep for what I label "the big ones", that is, the leagues in which I participate with friends, posting buddies, etc. Anyway, here are some observations:

-The first 4 picks in each have been differing in order but both consisting of Vladdy, Pujols, ARod, and Teixeira.

-David Wright is a first-rounder, going 10th and 11th.

-Andruw Jones is way overrated, going in the 2nd round in each of these drafts

-The Big Five Speedsters (Crawford, Reyes, Figgins, Ichiro, and Pods) go in the first 4 rounds.

-While Mariano Rivera was picked in the 3rd and 4th rounds, the runs occurred in the 6th, 7th, and 8th rounds. If you want a big closer, choose one here.

-No one seems to realize Josh Willingham is: a)an existing entity; b)a member of the Florida Marlins Baseball Organization; c) capable of .290, 20, 85 this year; and d)eligible at catcher

-Oliver Perez went in the 12th in one draft, while going completely undrafted in another.

It's 3:25 am...more observations on the flip side.

I find your blog very interesting! The patterns in fantasy baseball drafting are so common in many of the drafts we do.

In fact, I was with you when you drafted Tuesday evening (2-22) in that 20-man Yahoo draft. That was nutz! Although everyone seems to have their own strategies, I find that there are strategies I've developed over the years:

a. Go for balance in the first few rounds. A power guy in the 1st round... a speed/power combo in the 3rd... an ace pitcher in the third... and a 2nd starter or closer in the 4th...

b. In the 5th round... I start loading up with a certain category. Power hitters are usually gone by this stage, so this is where I load up on either closers, SP's with high K's or speedsters... from the 5th to the 7th, I load up on one of these categories... (you can usually get a Chad Cordero, Willy Taveras, or Kelvim Escobar during these rounds).

c. Look for talented prospects between the 9th and 12th rounds

d. End the final 6 rounds with guys who are sleepers... If you read Baseball Prospectus, you will find these guys. Who knew Holliday was going to have a 2nd half tear? Who knew about Chad Tracy? Who knew about Felipe Lopez? Baseball Prospectus knew...
